"Perseverance and Endurance (James 1:2-4)"
[more guides]
Lord, Jesus, thank you for caring more about our character
than our comfort. Thank you for loving us enough to train and discipline us
and want us to be whole and complete. Thank you for not only understanding our
hardships and heartaches, but for embracing them and experiencing them as your
own, as one of us. And, thank you that you endured through it all, and considered
such a life well worth living.
Lord,
we while and complain rather than giving thanks; we chose self-pity and grumpiness
rather than joy; we let our attention wander rather than persevering. Forgive
us, Lord.
Lord, this is hard! But, we trust you and that nothing you ask us to face is
a mistake. We want this joy in the face of trials, but only you can give it
to us. Lord, we are so easily discouraged, so easily distracted, so easily dismayed,
so easily entangled. Show us that our problems aren't any greater or worse than
those of others. Lift our eyes up to see you and follow you in running the race
and running it well.
For the sake of Jesus, who endured to the end.
Amen.
Scripture Passages on Perseverance and Endurance
Romans 5:3
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering
produces 4 perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
2 Thessalonians 1:4
Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in
all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.
2 Thessalonians 3:4-5
4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do
the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and
Christ's perseverance.
Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us
throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and
let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
James 1:2-4
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance
must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
2 Peter 1:5-7
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and
to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control,
perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly
kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
1 Timothy 4:15
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone
may see your progress. ' Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in
them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
Hebrews
10:32-36
32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood
your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. 33 Sometimes you were
publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by
side with those who were so treated. 34 You sympathized with those in prison
and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that
you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35 So do not throw away your
confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36 You need to persevere so that when
you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
Hebrews 12:7-13
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is
not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes
discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover,
we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it.
How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our
fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines
us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant
at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness
and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your
feeble arms and weak knees. 13 "Make level paths for your feet," so that the
lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
1 Peter 2:20-21
20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and
endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable
before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving
you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
Romans 15:4-6
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that
through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity
among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 SO that with one heart and mouth
you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 6:3-10
3 We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not
be discredited. 4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way:
in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments
and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6 in purity, understanding,
patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7 in truthful
speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand
and in the left; 8 through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine,
yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet
we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing;
poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
Colossians 1:10-12
10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and
may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the
knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious
might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving
thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the
saints in the kingdom of light.
1 Thessalonians 1:3
We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith,
your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord
Jesus Christ.
1 Timothy 6:11-12
11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith.
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good
confession in the presence of many witnesses.
2 Timothy 3:10-11
10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith,
patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things
happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet
the Lord rescued me from all of them.
2 Timothy 2:3-10
3 Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving
as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs-he wants to please his commanding
officer. 5 Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive
the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking
farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what
I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. 8 Remember Jesus
Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for
which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But
God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of
the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with
eternal glory.
2 Timothy 4:1-5
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the
dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke
and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will
come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own
desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what
their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth
and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure
hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
